A 26-year-old Maryland native has been arrested on gun charges and is being questioned in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan last week. Tribune Online reports that Brian Thompson was fatally shot Wednesday morning in Midtown Manhattan, New York, in what police have described as a “brazen, targeted attack.”According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the arrest marks a significant breakthrough in a manhunt that spanned the East Coast.
The suspect, identified as Luigi Mangione, was apprehended at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on Monday morning. “He was sitting there eating,” Joseph Kenny, the Police Department’s chief of detectives, said at the briefingActing on a tip from a restaurant employee, officers found Mangione seated with a laptop, wearing a blue medical mask. When asked to lower his mask, officers recognised him from police-distributed photos tied to the Manhattan shooting.
Police said Mangione initially reacted with silence and visible nervousness when questioned about recent trips to New York. A search of his backpack later revealed a 3D-printed pistol and a silencer, leading to additional charges under Pennsylvania law.
